1)      Accommodations 101

Why do students with disabilities get the accommodations they do? What process do students go through to access services?  Learn more about the Interactive Process that is required by the ADA for students to get approved for accommodations. Jen will share some resources that you can take back to the classroom and share with students to help support their disability.

2)      Creating an Engaging Classroom: Implementing Active Learning Techniques

Do you want to increase student engagement? Research demonstrates that active teaching techniques improve student understanding and can be effective in developing high-order thinking. Join the workshop to learn ways to develop and deploy active learning techniques to engage students and to use technologies for fostering active learning.

3)      Workshop - The Multilingual Learner

Based on Claire Kramsch’s (2019) book The Multilingual Subject, this workshop aims to facilitate discussions on developing our own definition of multilingual learners. Then, through our definition, the discussion moves forward in identifying the types of multilingual learners we might find at BHC, their educational needs in our context, and possible teaching tools to assist their learning.

4)      Dear Freshman: A Professor’s Guide to Getting it Right

Join faculty and staff for a discussion on the book, Dear Freshman: A Professor’s Guide to Getting it Right. Come prepared to share and gather ideas on how to use the material from the book to help our students be successful in college. You can find a copy of the book at the Black Hawk College library, bookstore and Amazon.

5)      Contract Grading for Writing Assignments: How to Increase Standards and Student Success at the Same Time

In this workshop, Andrew Hoogheem will present an alternative praxis for assessing student writing. Participants will learn how to synthesize best practices in designing and assessing writing assignments, transforming them from high-stakes barriers into genuine learning experience.

6)      Streaming Media Through the Library

7)      Making the Switch to Canvas’ New Quizzes

The pressure is off from making the switch from the Classic Canvas Quizzes tool to the Canvas’ New Quizzes tool. Canvas is leaving it up to us if we want to stay with the same ole same ole, or move forward with new features and opportunities. Come learn if New Quizzes is for you.

8)      Teaching with Video

Video can help provide an element of engagement and lecture in online courses. It also provides an opportunity for adding more visual and audio elements to your class. This workshop will offer advice on how to improve the quality of your videos, making them more engaging to your students.

9)      Designing Courses with Open Educational Resources

Open educational resources (OER) give educators the ability to adapt instructional resources to the individual needs of learners, to ensure that resources are up-to-date, and to ensure that cost of educational resources is not a barrier to learners. This workshop provides a practical approach to designing courses using OER.
